I would expect a service pack to be a much faster install than a complete OS.

I have a time line in one of my posts for installing with a dual boot. It includes updating as well as logging in and out of here.

Starts at post #7

And on a newer machine, only OS, no dual boot.

Another figured he could beat me installing Vista. 5-6 hours later he reposted that he couldn't yet dual boot, maybe not boot period(haven't read in awhile).
The next day they came back and said it only took an hour. LOL
He also has a newer more powerful PC than my OEM.
Heres the link:

Don't forget to check his specs against mine. Starts at post #5

The hardware problem you mentioned being reason for Vista taking so long? Hasn't shown up with PCLinuxOS since it was installed beginning of Dec.

Note that these were posted long before you even joined, not trying to spread FUD.
(Besides we are in Linux Forums)
How about the install? That was 10X faster by far. I would agree without a doubt. But I don't know, what do you do most...boot your computer or install the OS?

Not sure where you are going with the rest of your post, sort of volatile but whatever. I'm not creating an argument here. Just pointing out that no Windows OS (with the exception of a Windows domain controller) takes 5 minutes to boot. I don't care if it's Windows 98SE, Windows 2000 Pro, etc.

I still like Linux (PCLOS) on my D400 laptop far more than I liked any Windows OS.

Good, lets not argue.

For some reason, that new PC my friend bought, took at least 5 min. I don't know why.
If it was hardware, Linux cured it. Whatever it was, Linux cured it.

I had them both here side by side and I could check 5 e-mail accounts on this machine and log off. That's when the other one, Vista, would light up the monitor. I turned his on first.

But no matter, Vista is long gone from it. He, his wife and just turned 9 year old son are very happy with PCLinuxOS. Yes, 9 years old. Feb. 22(He thinks MS is backwards and hard to learn, just one 9 year olds' opinion)

All three are newbs to anything to do with a computer.

Get this, I never realized it but on my Dell D400, when I had Windows Vista on it, Intel SpeedStep never worked. I always wondered why battery life never lasted as long.

I'm trying to get my wife converted to PCLOS but she's being difficult about it. I think I can convince her.

I didn't give my girlfriend a choice.

Well, I did, with the understanding I was not fixing anything anymore on XPSP2.
Use it all you want till you can't. She didn't bother.

F-Secure automatically updated upon boot. Plus a limited account.

I prefer Redhat but Ubuntu and Kubuntu are a little bit easier to use.

May I cast a vote for Mint Linux. It is an easy install and runs well on older computers as well as new equipment. Excellent support forums too. I've managed to get it working with my wireless network, to which I can't say about any other distro. The only drawback I can see to it is questionable scanner support. Some will work and some won't.

I figured I'd toss in a vote for Open Suse 10.3, with KDE and XFCE desktops. Everything worked "out of the box" except for MP3 and some other codecs that were needed. These were added easily, and there's plenty of good online forums for support.

"different horses for different courses", that is I look at the computer and the person using it and then help them get the most out of there distro, for example there is a lot going for old laptops using puppy linux, DSL linux, and flux linux, whereas with normal models if I am getting someone to try linux for the first time I perfer Mint linux because of its wide gnome based driver base while have the the PClinux like no after install, but then when someone wants a more robust system I think fedora is good, while I very much like kubuntu because I prefer KDE to gnome, also I like knoppix for rescuing systems

simply that someone who says "this and only this distro" has either only one computer, or has only one goal in mind
