problem with urpmi
I'm trying to use urpmi. I get to step 3 and copy/paste what they tell me to in console and I get: bash urpmi. media command not found.
I am trying to do this in root. When I switch to root, it doesn't ask me for a password.
It looks like this root@localhost)#
I'm using Mandriva 1999-2005 version, Linux, Mozilla-Firefox 1.6
can anyone help me? Thanks

Hi atswan183,

Welcome to TSG!

Try consulting the Mandriva wiki related to urpmi here for an answer and how to use it.

I looked at the wiki, and couldn't find anything about the problem I'm having. The trouble shooting section is for problems you have after you have it downloaded.
I noticed on one of the examples where they tell you to switch to root it listed as( "root@localhost augustine) Augustine being the user name ? or password?. When I switch to root , I just get the "root @ local host) . Any other things I could try would be appreciated. THanks.

Hi atswan183,

augustine is the hostname of the computer they used to provide the example. local host is your computer's default hostname, or alias if you assign a hostname to it.

Note: root@localhost)# is your prompt from the root account after you switch to the root account, so it is waiting for your commands as input to execute.

ok, I thought that was the way I was understanding it. But it still says "urpmi.addmedia command not found. It just will not accept anything from the urpmi website.

Hi atswan183,

I think what it means is that the urpmi.addmedia command on your machine in the release of urpmi is either not installed or cannot be found in your PATH search.

Try issuing the following command:
root@localhost)# which urpmi.addmedia

It will either return a result or not. If not, it can mean one of two things:
1) if it is really installed, then you do not have the directory path of where it is installed in your PATH search variable.
2) or, given it is not installed, then it does not find it.

Either urpmi is not fully installed or you need to add the pathname to where urpmi is installed to your PATH variable - then the which command above should work.

Thank you Tom. Since my last post, the guy who originally set up my computer, came over and updated Linux for me, so I didn't get to try your idea on the old version, but I will try it on the new one. I was having trouble updating my Flash Player and Firefox and that is why I was trying to use Urpmi. But now everything got updated with the new Linux , so it's all working good. Thank you for your help!
