what does seamonkey mail mean by hostname?
I installed Vector linux on another machine and while setting up seamonkey mail I am running into a problem I'm not too sure about. I can set up the mail account with my email address and the server mail addresses but then it is asking for a "hostname". I'm not sure where to tell it the hostname or what the hostname even is.

Can someone help? I'm sure all the mozilla mail account setups are like this but I've never set one up till now.

Thanks, Neal

Hi Neal,

You need to set the hostname of your Vector linux machine by logging in or becoming root, and then issuing the hostname command.

You should read the man page on the hostname command by issuing: man hostname
in order to see what the syntax is for setting the hostname of your Vector linux machine.

I log in when the machine is booted. I have a root account and my user account.

Are you saying I should log-in in the root account and then set up the e-mail?

I just find it wierd because I've set up e-mail accounts on other linux OSes and never had it ask for my hostname. I'll give it a try.

Thanks, Neal

No, he's saying you need to either login as root or "su" to root or use "sudo" to set the system hostname.

When you open a shell window, what does your prompt look like? What happens if you enter the command "hostname" in a shell window?

Peace...

You are working as neal
Frequently used programs:
Configuration : vasm
File manager : mc (press F2 for useful menu)
Editor : mcedit, nano, vi
Multimedia : alsamixer, play
vector:/~
neal:$ hostname
vector.linux.net
vector:/~
neal:$

This is what I get from hostname command. Sorry to get back so late but been busy week.

I think the hostname would be vector.linux.net??

So next question, how do I enter that name when I setup the e-mail? This one silly thing is keeping me from enjoying my vector.

Your host name is "vector" and your fully qualified domain name (FQDN) is "vector.linux.net".

At which point during the Seamonkey account creation process are you prompted to enter a "hostname"? I also run Seamonkey on Linux and do not recall seeing a prompt for that info. I see prompts for POP3 (or IMAP) mail servers and SMTP mail servers.

Peace...

When I open up seamonkey mail, it wants to create an account. I enter all the info correctly and when I click done or whatever the final button is an error message comes up prompting me to "enter a valid host name".

There is no place to enter a hostname anywhere on the whole setup process so I'm confused about the whole deal.
I'm using Absolute linux on my laptop right now and I'm also unable to set up the sylpheed mail on it either. So strange. I may end up going back to Ubuntu or a derivative because I never really had issues at all setting up anything.

What do you folks think? Could this be an issue with the bios setup on the computer model having something to do with passwords and such?

Cool. When the "Finish" button appears on the confirmation dialog with all the entered settings, the mail addresses you entered looked correct? Your servers are in the form [domain].com or .net, right? Are ALL of the mail server addresses current? Were you prompted to enter a SMTP server address?

I found this thread which indicates an invalid (or obsolete) mail server address could possibly cause your issue.

If you were not prompted to enter the SMTP server address, you will have to see what is defined as the SMTP server and make sure it's correct.

Peace...

Well I'm not afraid to say I screwed up. I didn't have the server addresses entered correctly, whoops.
The only problem I have now is I can't check the new e-mail account because the server won't accept my password I set up waaaaay back when I set up an e-mail account through my provider.
I have never changed it through the years.

I guess I'll call the customer support line from my provider and see what we can do.

Thanks, for the help guys!
