Alright, I currently have Vista and Ubuntu (Hardy Heron) installed on my system. I installed Ubuntu with the Wubi Installer, however, I do not know how to start the darn thing. I notice that about 30 GB are gone from my hard drive, but I cannot find Ubuntu. So, I boot up and it gives me the option to boot into either Vista or Ubuntu. I choose ubuntu, and then I choose the option to install normally or something like that, and then it goes into some BusyTalk command stuff, and I am lost. Please help!!!

If you installed using the Wubi installer...it should not be asking you anything about installing normally...is the cd still in your drive? If so, remove it because ubuntu is already installed if the 30gb is missing.

What CD are you talking about? I just installed from WUBI, and that is all. Keep in mind that I have never used linux before, so if I need to do something else, can you please tell me what I need to do?

You're still installing it. It will handle everything and from there you'd still have to wait 10-15 mins more/less.

How do I install Ubuntu?

* Run Wubi, insert a password for the new account, and click "install".
* The installation process from this point is fully automatic.
* The installation files (700MB) will be downloaded and checked, after which you will be asked to reboot.

( I think this is where you are now ... )
* Do so and select Ubuntu at the boot screen.
* The installation will continue for another 10-15 minutes and the machine will reboot again.


* This is it. Now you can select Ubuntu at the boot screen and start using it.

I will try this. But if it doesn't work, I am going to go ahead and clarify what the problem is. I downloaded Wubi installer off of the internet, and I ran the program when done. I told it that it could use 30 GB, the Ubuntu Desktop Environment, and I put in my login name and password. Then, it installed about 700 MB of stuff, and then I left to go somewhere for about two hours. I came back, and it told me that I need to restart my computer. I did, and then restarted it again, and went into Ubuntu. The splash screen came on, and then went to a BusyBox terminal (inframstr something) and it kind of looks like an open command prompt in Windows. I don't think it is doing anything because the cursor is just blinking, waiting for me to type something in. However, I will try and wait for 15 minutes to see if that does anything. Oh yeah, I already went in and edited the second line of something and typed in irqpool, to no avail.

Okay, let me clarify everything, it might help resolve my issue.

I went online to download the Wubi installer. I installed it and ran the program. I let Ubuntu use 30 GB, I chose the Ubuntu desktop manager, and I set my login name and password. I saw that it needed to download about 700 MB of stuff, so I left my computer alone for two hours. I came back, and all it told me to do is restart. So I restarted into Vista, and then restarted again so that I could choose to go into Ubuntu.

Ubuntu and Vista both appear on my bootscreen. I chose Ubuntu, and then it loaded the splash screen. Right before the splash screen appears, a message appears on the top telling me something about a bug with some type of timer and an ACPI problem. And then, it goes into a BusyBox terminal with an inframstr thing. It just sits there, waiting for me to type something in. People have told me to wait 15 minutes. I waited 30 minutes, nothing happens.

Oh yeah, for the record, I have already edited one of the boot options by typing in "irqpool," like I was told by the Wubi forums to do, to no avail.

Are there any suggestions??? I hope this clarifies the problem.

Yes, that clarifies the problem. And, it sounds like it installed correctly. But the error indicates a problem and possibly a bug with it or maybe with Wubi. You can try doing the whole thing over, or try another method, like using VirtualBox to run Ubuntu inside Vista, or InstLux for Ubuntu.

I am thinking about downloading the ISO file, and then burning the images onto a CD, and then booting from that CD. I have already found a guide, so I am thinking about doing this. Thank You guys!!!

Yes, you can install that way, or run it live. But if you install from the CD, you will need a real partition on your hard drive to install it into.

I finally got it to work. I uninstalled Wubi, and then downloaded the ISO off of the internet. I burned the ISO onto a CD. To make a long story short, I successfully got Ubuntu to work. However, I made a fatal mistake. I forgot to shrink my Vista partition, so Ubuntu wrote right over it. So, no more Vista for me. Right now I am running the Vista recovery disk on the laptop to return everything to out-of-box condition, and this time I will shrink the Vista partition. However, I have two questions:

First, whenever I went into Ubuntu, I would see wavy lines on the screen. I think it is because the display driver is not loaded. So, I looked around, and I found the drivers. I have three of them, and ATI FireGL something is enabled, but not in use. How do I get this to work???

Second, I have a huge wireless problem, it simply doesn't work. Help on this too!!!!!

I can't really look right now, because I just swiped the program to get Vista back on with the Vista recovery disk. However, I do remember that it was in some kind of restricted driver area, or driver manager area. It was checked off for enabled, but it said in red letters that the device was not in use. However, I think I might have a solution. I was using the 64-bit edition, I just downloaded the 32-bit edition, so I think it might work better on my laptop. The only 64-bit thing on my laptop is the processor, so I think a 32-bit environment might work better.

Yes, I was going to mention that the driver would be among the restricted downloads. But is that the card you have? It should show the same thing in Vista, of course.

So, I got the wavy line thing fixed by installing the 32-bit edition of Ubuntu. However, the ATI card still is in the restricted driver thing and I do not know how to fix it. I mean, yesterday was the first real day of using Linux in my lifetime. I also have a problem with the wireless system, I do not think that Atheros wireless is supported by Ubuntu stock. but I need someone to tell me how to install the driver. I will need to download the driver with Vista, and then put in on a memory stick. When I get into Ubuntu, do I just double click on the driver thing, or do I need to do some crazy coding with the Terminal??? Also, to fix the ATI problem, do I just need to go to the ATI website, and get their linux driver for the card?
