Printer sharing problems (Ubuntu to XP)
Hi all,

I am a reasonably new user of Linux (but I have learned a fair bit of it), but one problem I have run into perplexes me.

I recently installed Ubuntu 8.04. I have configured it to connect to my wireless network, but I cannot connect to my dad's computer (running Windows XP). I have the printer set so that it is connected to his machine, but anything I try to print does not go through. It just sits in his print queue. I have selected the correct model for the printer drivers.

When I go into the Printer properties to test the connection, it comes up "The print share is accessible". I will attach a screenshot at the end of this post.

Additionally, I have added the Windows component "Print Services for UNIX" to my dad's computer.

Is there anything I am missing? Thank you in advanced.

What happens if you open the queue and direct it to print? Just nothing, or some error message that might be a clue?

Opening the print queue, it just sits there at 64KB cached out of whatever the file size is spooled. The light on the printer itself flashes, indicating an error, yet dad's machine does not indicate an error. In order to clear the print queue I have to switch off the printer, disable and re-enable the Print Spooler service and switch the printer back on.

I'm real new to Ubuntu and Linux myself, and you are way ahead of me on this printer business. My printer is network connected, so different operation.

I think that the reaction you are getting from the XP and printer indicate a problem with the driver on the Ubuntu machine, but am not positive and don't know how to proceed.

If you don't get some real help here, suggest you look for a Ubuntu specific forum.

Considering the complexity of the situation, you might be right. I have registered with the Ubuntu Forums, so I might turn my attention that way.

Thanks for trying in any case. I'll post the solution when I get it.
