Automatic updates on linux based OS
Hi folks, I really like the fact that Ubuntu offers automatic updates for the software it holds but I'm wondering which of the hundreds of other Linux based distros offer a feature like Ubuntu to update the software periodically. I was even able to upgrade my old version of Ubuntu 7.10 to the newer 8.04. I am looking for other distros like this but with a smaller footprint. I have tried xubuntu and its nice but still too large IMO.

Thanks, if you can offer feedback.

What size distro were you looking for?

PCLinuxOS mini-me is a pretty small install (I've installed it on a 2GB USB flash drive), and it
uses the Synaptic Package Manager.

I have tiny me installed on a laptop. Is this what you speak of? I haven't used it enough to know if it offers auto updates. Does it? If so great, I like tiny me.

Are you saying that any distro with synaptic offers auto updates?

Well minime is a little different than tinyme. Minime is a bit more robust, with more packages
installed by default.

If by "automatic updates" you mean updates that are installed without the root user's prompting, I think you should stay away from that. You should ALWAYS review the updates that are offered by your package manager. Stuff has been known to "break" for sure.

There is one spec in the OP's question you guys overlooked he wants one with an auto updater PCLOS doesn't have that, I think MEPIS has what you're looking for but I'm not sure what you mean"smaller footprint."

By smaller footprint I mean I like the Linux distros that aren't so large. The ones that don't come with loads of software that I will never use. Like xubuntu is smaller than Ubuntu
Or Mini me or tiny me is much smaller than pclinux os.

I like Mepis alot but I can't seem to get it to install on my laptops HD. I can run the live cd fine for days but install just does not go.
