Solved: X sever?
I've been running Linux for two days, and every time I solve one probklem, another 5 arise.

I'm trying to install the drivers for my Club 3D 7600GT graphics card.

I keep getting this error when I try to install it:

Why?

Hi cancon,

Why? Because Nvidia states in the message that it is a requirement for the installation of the driver for your graphics card.

What Linux distribution are you using?

To exit X before trying to install the driver locate the command running X:
$ sudo ps x
then look for the X server process denoted by /usr/bin/X and its pid (process id), and issue the kill command as root with just the pid number, i.e. without the brackets:
$ sudo kill -9 <pid>

After installation, you may need to reboot.

In Ubuntu press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to go to text prompt

Log in, enter password etc.

Quote:
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
Do whatever you need to do

Quote:
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start

okay i think it worked, but now i get the message "signal out of range" and I can't boot ubuntu.

It has the loading screen, and the orange bar goes to the end then i get the error.

Is there an ubuntu safe mode?
