Hi Folks,

I have a Dual boot Vista Ubuntu with Grub as my boot loader

As I am on the road I want to prepare for trouble in case something happens. I have a Live CD which has helped once before. But was wondering about a USB alternative.

I did some reading online but its a bit too much this morning

Am I right if I install this USB it will help?

OR is there something else?

Really all I want is to be able to stick a usb in, boot, and a GUI come up helping me restore my dual boot

Hi DaveSS,

First things first. The web link you gave is out-of-date. The new link is here.

Second, are you looking to replace your Live CD with a USB? If so, look here. What you want is a persistent USB flash drive installation.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the new link. Just went through everything with the instalation, about to give it a test run.

No I wasn't looking for linux on a stick. I was looking for something that can quickly fix a broken MBR if it ever happens.

I happened to me years ago and I have live CD that fixed it. But was looking for something a little smaller now

Nuts. Nothing. Followed the instructions to a tee. Have bios set to usb first.

Think I will concentrate on that other vista issue you were helping me with and carry a Live CD around instead.

I might just empty the boot folder contents on the USB into the main filesystem on the usb. Maybe it's not seeing any thing. Then again in could be the Vaio's bios.

It may not be a good idea to empty the /boot folder contents into the main file system. Then for sure it won't see anything.

Yep, it didn't work. Nuts. I just wanted to be able to plug a usb into my laptop and boot into something that would fix grub in the event something ever happened to it. And I wasn't carrying around a CD.

I have used super grub from a cd and it worked well, although i never tried USB. I would guess that your sony probably has an SD card reader. If super grub fails to boot from USB, you might have better luck with an SD card. just a thought.
