Cool Ok...it's time for a change?
I am an engineering technician by trade, and dabble in early tools and technologies as a hobby. As a result, I'm still attached to this old IBM Thinkpad that was built during the Windows 2000 years, but has since been "updated" with XP. It's a chore to maintain, but it has become a trusted friend.

So here's my question; I have a new un-installed copy of Linux. I would like to know what sort of advantages there would be to use Linux on my laptop. Normally I use this computer for email, casual surfing, and on-line research. I have an old version of AutoCad that I occasionally use when developing an idea while not at the office. What sorts of software will I be able to still use if I convert? ( CAD mainly).

Haven't had much chance to study up on Linux, and I appreciate any advice.

The table of equivalents / replacements / analogs of Windows software in Linux.
http://www.linuxrsp.ru/win-lin-soft/table-eng.html

You will need to scroll almost to bottom, section 9.
"9) Scientific and special programs."
