Setting up and Ubuntu Linux Server
I'm in the process of setting up an Ubuntu Linux Server with Apache, PHP, MySQL, OpenSSH and all the other goodies. I've got a book that is guiding me through how to do that. I've had no problems working within Linux, however I am trying to set up PuTTY so that I can connect remotely. My problem is that the server is located at my home which is behind a proxy/router etc...

My question is how can I get a static IP address for my server and what do I then need to do to set it up with the internet domain name that I have? I understand I will probably have to call Comcast and ask for something, but what do I need from them?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Hi bryantms,

First things first, are you starting from an installation of the Desktop Edition of Ubuntu 8.04, or the Server Edition? Use the Server Edition if you are setting up an Ubuntu server.

The release can be downloaded from here, and then burned to CD/DVD. Just click on the download link. And BTW, on October 30 Canonical will be shipping 8.10 which should then be available for download at that download link.

Hey Tom --
I'm using Ubuntu Server edition (Hardy Heron). I've got it set up and working and am working on getting Apache, PHP and MySQL running right now.

The thing is I am a college student and only home for this weekend so I would like to be able to remotely connect to it using PuTTY. However, I can't because the way I understand it there needs to be a static IP address to do so. I also believe that I need to have a static IP address when I'm ready to allow the server to host a website. My question is does Comcast (or any other ISP) offer something like this and if so how much would it be a month?

You can probably get a static IP (business service) from Comcast; I think that service starts around $99/month, but I'm not sure. Anyhow, you asked the wrong question.

Question: how can I always access my home system even though the public IP address may change?

Answer: use a free dynamic domain name service such as DynDNS.

That's exactly what I need! I'll check it out a bit and see if I can't get it working. Phew, thank god I didn't go the Comcast route.

Thanks for the help. I'm sure there will be more questions.

Hi bryantms,

Look at this thread for more info on setup: Installing LAMP On Ubuntu For Newbies. Note: LAMP stands for Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP.
