Solved: Booting in runlevel 5
My suselinux 10.3 box has taken to booting up in runlevel 3 rather than its usual runlevel 5...

How do i get it back to booting at runlevel 5?

Hi Nemetode,

It sounds like /etc/inittab contains the line:
id:3:initdefault:
which indicates it should boot up in runlevel 3.

What have you done recently to make any changes to the system - install, etc? that would modify the init runlevel?

P.S. This is one reason to keep a set of notes to identify what changes are made to a system so you can experiment with backing out a change if it causes problems like this.

Yes thats the problem! I really do not know what caused this as I haven't intentionally made any changes...

Just change it to 5 should cure it then?

When booted to SUSE in run level 3, first need to log on, then type in; init 5, or startx, but it may not boot into GUI mode due to some problem, so try to boot to your SUSE CD for doing a repair current installation, maybe it is the video display driver.

if X doesn't start after a "startx" as root do a x -configure this command will probe your video card
and write an xorg.conf file it will also tell you how to test this file
if X starts kill it with ctrl+alt+backspace
then move your new configuration file to "/etc/X11/xorg.conf

IF something is wrong with your X configuration and X doesn't start the computer will
go in to an endless loop because gdm is started in respawn mode
so make sure X is working before you set run level 5 as your default
