Can't turn off computer from shutdown screen
I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 and I can't shut down my desktop from the shutdown screen in the Operating System. i've tried the Linux forms and chat sights looking for answer, but no luck. When i try to shutdown from the screen the hard drive stops spinning but the tower stays powered up, the monitor stays on with the Ubuntu logo screen showing.
Any ideas on how to correct this problem?
Thank Chuck Wish

Hi Chuck,

From a terminal window, i.e. Applications>Accessories>Terminal you will come up as a regular user (assuming regular user login or Live CD environment) with the prompt:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$

Issue the following command to get into root account:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo -i
root@ubuntu:~#
and then issue the following command from the root account to immediately power down the system:
root@ubuntu:~# shutdown -h now

That should do it.

P.S. Plug your system into a surge strip with a glow on/off switch and after power down, turn the switch off. I further have my system additionally plugged into a 1500 joule power surge suppression protector which is plugged into the surge strip.
