Linux Server Shutdown Settings
I recently set up Ubuntu Server on a machine at home and manually installed Apache, PHP, PEAR and a bunch of other goodies. The problem I am having is that because it is located at home (while I am at college), I cannot access the machine to turn it on or off. When I use PuTTY to access the machine, after a certain period it does not respond. I must call someone and have them restart the machine.

Are there automatic shutdown settings present that are sleeping or hibernating the Linux machine after so many hours of no use? When the system is restarted, everything works just fine.

If there are such settings, how can I enable it to remain on and prevent it from essentially shutting down to the point where I can no longer remotely access it.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Hi bryantms,

One thing you can do is aquaint yourself with Remote Administration of Linux Systems, particularly ssh client (on your remote system) and server (deamon) on your home system.

You can also visit ubuntuforums.org and search for "remote server administration" or ask a question in the appropriate forum there.
