external monitor issue
I JUST scrapped Windows tonight (Vista Ultimate 64-bit). I was sick of whining about microsoft and their flawed 'flagship' and decided I'd do something about it.

I installed Ubuntu and can't get my monitor to work. I'm assuming the Fn-F8 function was exclusive to windows (naturally i tried). I can't get the gksudo displayconfig (or ...-gtk) to work. First off the selections don't display my 1440x900 laptop and once I select generic and my 2nd monitor resolution it won't let me switch to either resolution.

I also tried running the nvidia x server settings and when I tried to save the configuration file it showed an error saying that the backup couldnt be created or something.

Also how do I get the KDE desktop or the Beryl desktop? (I installed the advanced 3d effects and selected the cube how do I get to it?)

Forgive my ignorance if these are dumb questions I'm pretty new to linux.
