Solved: Removing previous Linux Kernel updates from GRUB
Hi all,

I currently have a dual-booting system (WinXP Home and Ubuntu). Over the past months, though, as newer releases and patches to the Linux kernel are released, I've noticed the list of bootable OS's in GRUB growing and growing. Is there a way of removing the older release kernel entries from GRUB?

Thank you in advanced.

I use Kate, but you could use whatever text editor you want...

Open a terminal:

sudo kate /boot/grub/menu.lst

Remove unwanted entries.

No worries. I'll give it a look, and let you know how it goes.

As a side question, how would I go about removing the actual kernel files (if it is at all recommended)? I have a 6GB partition for Ubuntu, and have less than 1GB left in usable space.

Using the Disk Usage Analyser program, it seems that the kernel files are taking up about 250MB. This is on account of five kernel upgrades (from version 2.6.24-16 to version 2.6.24-21). Is it safe to remove the older kernel files, and if it is, how would I go about it? Again, thank you in advanced.

It is recommended that you keep the current kernel (of course) PLUS the previous one in case something breaks and you need to boot into the old kernel.

Well, the operation was a complete success. I have cut down the boot loader and managed to salvage drive space. I am still able to boot into both Windows and Ubuntu, without any problems.

Thank you all for your help.
