Cool Can't play music files in Fedora
It has been a big problem for me for long time about the proper way to make Fedora play audio and video files. If I try to play a video clip "Totem Player" opens and says "Your computer doesn't have a decoder installed.
I don't understand what this decoder is. I have kept a dual boot system other o/s being XP. But it doesn't have such problems. I want help to solve this problem in fedora. I'm neither an expert in XP nor Fedora(linux).
I know how to manage XP to work under me, but not for Fedora.
I have lot more problems, but I decided first to study the way to solve this issue.

Hi 060456F,

How do you do your updates - yum, synaptic package manager?

What BlackMirror suggested is perhaps the best video/music player you can get for Linux, and what the error message is telling you is that you do not have the proper decoding translator for the particular audio/video format you are attempting to play - i.e. its codec.

Visit your repositories and/or try to install vlc or visit the vlc website to download the vlc player and install it. See VLC media player, and download from here, if you cannot find it in your Fedora repositories (preferred method of download and installation).

Hope that works for you!

Question What about dependancies
Thanks a lot for both of u to giving me an option. I downloaded vlc from one of your links and tried to install it as a general rpm package. But it says something about dependancies. I didn't try to install it using yum, because I don't have an internet connection in the machine which I have installed both xp and fedora. Is there a way to install it properly without using an internet connection.

Cheers.

Hi 06045F,

Yes, but you need to know the dependencies which synaptic package manager or yum could resolve for you.

The following can also be done - but, all of these techniques require an Internet connection and a way of getting the downloads to your platform.

Try the following to see if it works:
You need to check that a "multiverse" mirror is listed in your /etc/apt/sources.list.

% sudo apt-get update
% sudo apt-get install vlc vlc-plugin-esd mozilla-plugin-vlc

Or, if you can download a .tgz or tar.gz file of vlc, that might be another alternative if the dependent files are included - I have no idea of whether they are or not. Give it a try, and let us know how it turns out.
