CPU Stress/Stabiltiy Test
I am building a computer with (for) a friend, and the plan is to take an AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ and underclock both cores down to 2800MHz from 3000MHz (PLEASE, do not ask why I chose this setup, do not tell me what you think I should have done, I put a lot of thought into this, and this is the best setup. Onto the question.). Using advice from senior member BG-0, I will first lower the multiplier from 15 down to 14, lowering the ultimate clock speed down to 2800/core, and then lower the voltage step by step until I reach a point where the system is unstable, and then put the voltage back up to a previous spot, and test again.

The question: What would be a good program to use for my stress/stability testing? I was told, by BG-0, to use Prime95, but not only can I not find a solid download link (their ftp server makes me cringe in pain), but their site says that it works only for Pentium-based CPUs, and it seems that I would have to deal with a whole plethora of setup before I can use it. What I am looking for is something that can operate from the command line (runlevel 3), gives constant output, and makes it easy to identify anomalies. Simplicity would be preferable, although not a requirement.

Edit: Doh, I apologize for not putting this in earlier. The OS being installed (after clock multiplier change, before voltage change) will be OpenSUSE 11.

A perfect example of what I am looking for is CPU Burn, except that hasn't been updated since 2001.

Hi Waldo_II,

You might have some luck searching for "cpu torture test". I don't know if AMD publishes any similar utilties that are downloadable by customers, but I would have a look at their web site to determine if such software is available. Prime95 is also Windows only, and can be downloaded from here.

Good luck with your project, and do let us know your findings!
