Solved: How do I update to Ubuntu 8.10 from 8.04?
I have a dual boot machine with Vista and Ubuntu 8.04 on it. How do I upgrade to Ubuntu 8.10 from 8.04? I attempted to install from the 8.10 Live CD but when it got to the partition manager it did not show me the current 8.04 partition only the Vista partition and unallocated space. Disc Management in Vista shows that I have a 37G primary Ubuntu partition and a 1.65 G swap for Ubuntu after the Vista partion on my first drive. This is where I want the 8.10 version to go. Should I wipe these current Ubuntu partions clean and let the 8.10 installation disc use the newly created unallocated space, or is there another way?

I thought it is just a click to confirm yes when being asked if the user wants the latest update in Ubuntu. You will get the same latest kernel in a working system.

If a user bothers with installing it from a CD/DVD then just nominate the existing Ubuntu 8.04 partition to be used for the new 8.10 version installation.

A clean install is to allow the the existing partition to be formatted, all previous files destroyed and the new system installed as a new system. A dirty installation is disallow the 8.10 installer to format the existing partition but put the new files over the existing filing system. It is not uncommon for a dirty installation to fail as the new installer may have bugs and not able to remove all the necessary files from the old system.

Thanks all. I did the network install/upgrade from my existing 8.04. Everything went well but man, did it take FOREVER. Next time I'm going to format and do a clean install.
