Were always told linux is open source is that just the kernel or is leagle to copy and freely distribute any distribution? I don't want to sell just give to some freinds.

I believe Linux is freely distributable; you may copy the CD(s) or burn your own images and charge for them if you wish -- but you must include the source code.
