Solved: Asus linux
So, the last thread died, but I thank Lotuscat for his help,

Anyway, I have purchased a Asus Eee pc with linux pre-installed

We had a conversation about installing Firefox 3 and Followed his instructions, some of the commands did nothing, some did something, and so I borrowed a Linux book from a friend, and got into it. As isturns out, some of the generic commands for linux red hat dont work on the bizzare distribution I have.

I can't seem to find a window manager, like gnome, anywhere on my system.
I am asking if anybody has any advice on the Asus Linux distribution, the exact linux dist I have is: Linux asus-994466021 2.6.21.4-eeepc i686 GNU/Linux :

Don't think a mobo manufacturer developing a Linux.

There are many versions of Linux too. I heard those sold with a PC belong to mostly the Debian family like Ubuntu so reading a Red Hat manual may be a bit out of date.

The kernel commands are essentially the same but more tools are available in the newer kernels. I get by with "LInux in a nutshell" for over 100 versions of Linux.

Within reason any Linux can be fitted into any PC because majority of the drivers are generic. If one is unhappy about one Linux one can always install others into the same PC. I always assemble the PC myself. Modern kernels work like a wonder. My current rig is assembled from an Intel i7 920 with tri-channel 6Gb ram. Even Vista needs drivers for the nic, video and the chipset but I have installed Ubuntu, Mepis and Dreamlinux without any driver. These Linux do provide facilities to upgrade the Nvidia video.

Just like a modern MS system a Linux protect the system by not activating the commands from users not having the root privilege (admin rights). One can only complain if

(1) Working in the terminal mode as a super user and the programs are available
(2) The programs required are not available and listed in the package manager and the standard way of downloading from GNU sites doesn't work.

Actually the ASUS EeePC has its own Linux distribution. Standard Linux commands and functionality are simply not available. Since the distro isn't available as a free download, only those with EeePCs can offer step by step assistance. You might try some web searches. Perhaps there's a forum dedicated to them that would help.

I would have thought Firefox would have come installed on the EeePC.

fluxflux-eee is a personal project created for my own use. I offered it to some eeePC-Users for testing and because of the positive feedback I decided to make it public.

03.10.2008: fluxflux-eee-en-2008-9 (as ISO):

* Support (ACPI, WLAN, WebCam, LAN, Bluetooth, Fn-Buttons, OSD) for:
* eeePC 70x
* eeePC 900
* eeePC 900A
* eeePC 901 (led for wlan/bt cannot be switched, if bt is on)
* eeePC 1000H (led for wlan/bt cannot be switched, if bt is on)
* Own fluxflux-repository to have updates and new features: more infos here ...
* fluxDesk: a very special desktop (a kind of easy-mode ...)
* UMTS: Huawei USB sticks will be supported out of the box:
* - plugged in before booting the sytem: automatic switching, in the menu there is a special script to create a connection or to use an existing connection
* - plugged in after booting the system: automatic switching and the script to connect will popup automatically
* All Updates up to 03. October 2008
* Flashcam kernel modul for using the webcam in flash applications (firefox, videochats via webbrowser) and a startscript to use it with firefox
* Encrypted Folder Management Tool: Create encrypted folders and mount/unmount it manually or in the bootprocess
* You can create a bootable USB drive or SD(HC) without booting the ISO, just have a look to the howto at the end of this site ...
* New RaLink kernel module (for eeepc 901 and 1000H) available via Synaptic
* New webcam kernel module available via Synaptic
* New suspend-script (for eeePC 901 and 1000H) available via Synaptic
* New wlan-toggle-script (for eeePC 901 and 1000H) available via Synaptic
* New hotkey-script (for a fix in all eeePCs and for instant keys in eeePC 901 and 1000H) available via Synaptic:
* Now you have 4 working instant keys (from left to right):
* 1 = Firefox
* 2 = Thunderbird
* 3 = Skype
* 4= Pidgin
* Feel free to change the commands in /etc/acpi/hotkey.sh to your favorites!

RootbeaR,

If you are the developer of eeepc and this is open-source then I would have expected that would be hardware independent. In other word the iso should be able to work on non-Asus hardware.

Do you work for Asus or associated with them as suggested by DoubleHelix ?

No.

I just came across it the other day.

It is supposed to be for Eee PCs. I couldn't even tell you whether or not that is specific to Asus or not.

My understanding is Eee is for minimal hardware requirements, keeping the notebook low-cost.

From what I have read, some people are not happy with the Linux version of these Eee machines, which is what developer of Fluxflux is trying to remedy.

"And to end with my thoughts: many, many users from all over the world are glad to use PCLinuxOS (fluxflux) and many, many users speak about it as the best system for the eeePC. In German magazines this remaster of PCLinuxOS was titled as a top system for the eeePC."

The only German I know or understand is "Oktoberfest."
