Which LINUX to install on an old imac G3 ?
I want to help my dad ressurect my old imac... I bought it in the summer 2000. It is an imac G3.. so I believe the chip is a powerpc..I tried to install Ubuntu (not the alternate disk) on it but the imac completely ignored it. What LINUX system is the easiest to install on an old imac G3? I would like to install one that runs ok and is easy to get up and running.

On a somewhat relate note, is it possible to install XP or any other OS on an imac? Id rather install a free LINUX OS but maybe paying some money for a copy of XP would work too...

Help!

You can try Fedora 10 or Gentoo.

Also, have you been to the Ubuntu for PowerPC forum for help with your Ubuntu installation?

I don't know if installing Gentoo or Fedora 10 will be easier than Ubuntu and Gentoo might be the hardest of the three.

Peace...

Yes you will need a special PPC version. An ordinary version will not do.

It very much depends on how much RAM you have and how big is your hard drive.

I have an iMac G3 and installed Xubuntu on it. That was because I only had 128Mb of RAM, while my hard drive was 7Mb.

If you don't have a lot of RAM then DON'T use the Desktop (LiveCD) because it take far more resources to install - use the Alternate (Straight Install) Disk instead.

Another thing is that by 8.10 the Xserver has got so cut down that it doesn't work easily with the G3. So either stick at 8.04 or search for the workaround on the UbuntuForums site - something like: ppc xserver

My G3 will take about 1Mb of RAM and G3s will work to about 127Gb hard drive -after that they need partitioning.

(I might be wrong but Flash has never been made to work in Linux on the Mac)
