Red face Fedora 9 source package
Hi!

I want to install and use vmware under fedora 9. I installed it using an rpm package. When I try to run it a message pops out in the terminal saying that "vmware is installed but not properly configured". It displayed a command to configure. I typed the command and it guide me in the proper way except at one point where it asks for the location of the kernel header files. I entered /usr/src/include. But actually there is no such directory in my fedora 9. I hope that I've not installed the kernel source package. How can I install it ?

Note: Add/Remove program opens but when I click an option it says "unable to retrieve software information". Why is this ?

Hi 060456F,

First, check out what directories are in /usr/src for fedora:
$ cd /usr/src
$ ls

Then run the following command from /usr/src:
$ find . -name "include" -type d -print
in order to find out what directories named include exist.

The kernel header files directory should be located somewhere in the output of the find command for your hardware architecture, like the following for Ubuntu 8.10's Live CD:
./linux-headers-2.6.27-7/include
./linux-headers-2.6.27-7-generic/include

Thumbs down Yes, in Ubuntu, but not in Fedora
Thank you for your quick reply. As you said I can find an 'include' directory in Ubuntu, but not in Fedora 9. I could only see a directory called 'redhat' inside the /usr/src. I read in a documentation that linux OS's install the kernel header files in /usr/src by default. What has happened to my header files ? As I can remember, I insatlled all the packages available in the Fedora 9 DVD. So, how could this be misplaced. I'm sure that you may have the correct answer in your hands.

Thanks a lot & happy new year (sorry to wishing you 5 days later)

Here is a really great Linux forum site to post at, and look under Distributions, Fedora for a more specific reply; http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/index.php Also check that you have your software sources repositories set up fully. You can use the; "yum update" in a terminal as root user which may help for getting the other updates too. Also there is a forum for Fedora users here; http://fedoraforum.org/
