Squid Proxy Question
I have Squid installed on Ubuntu 8 and using Webmin to configure it.
I have it setup and can access the net through all the computers in the house using the proxy, but my question is about the cache...I set it to have 5 gigs of cache, to speed up access and downloads of things I use quite often.

From 2 different computers in the house, both accessing the net through the proxy, I download one file about 50 megs...then go to the other computer and download same file...it seems it is still downloading from the net and not from the cache...

Any ideas?

Thanks

What information does your cache_log on the first computer have to indicate the 50MB file is stored in the cache?

Also, what is the largest sized object Squid is configured to cache? Squid pays close attention to headers sent to it, along with the content passing through it, so if the content you are downloading has a "no cache" kind of header, Squid won't cache that content.

Which version of Squid are you using? I'm currently working on Squid as a reverse proxy for a website to serve as a HTTP accelerator.

Peace...

Sorry about delay answering...

Latest version of Squid, not in front of computer to look right now...
I saw that largest object size, I left it at default, which if i remember correctly is 13kb...definitely a problem..I just wasnt sure if that meant zip, exe, iso files and such..if so, will change that immediately...lol

Also..will check the log when i get in front of computer also...

Ok, when you can verify if your running Squid 2 or Squid 3, as both are currently maintained.

Also, the largest object size that will be cached in memory is different than the largest object size that will be cached on disk. So, you'll need to check both values.

Also, look in the access.log file to see if your getting TCP_MISS messages for the content you're trying to download on the other machine as those messages can contain additional useful info.

Peace...

It looks like the default value of the maximum_object_size setting is 4MB.

If webmin won't let you configure that, see if you can get that changed in your squid.conf file manually. You might need to contact your website host for help with this.

You can read about the other Squid 2.7 options here. I presume you're running Squid 2.7-STABLE5. I've been configuring a Squid 3.0-STABLE11 server.

Peace...
