Linux uninstalled, the prompt still comes up
Hello there,

I used to have both Windows Vista Business and Ubuntu installed on my computer. It worked so that when I booted up my computer, there was a prompt and I could choose between Windows and Ubuntu.

Recently I uninstalled Ubuntu, but when I startup the prompt asking me which OS to use still comes up!

I would like to know how I can just get rid of the prompt and make it automatically, without asking, start up Windows.

You need to "fix mbr" (Master Boot Record)

It can be done in different ways depending on the distribution you are using.

Google something like: Windows Vista Business fix mbr
...and you should find it.

Or follow the Task B7 of the last link in my signature.

You need a Vista installation DVD to do that. "fixmbr" only works for Xp and Win2k.

gurgle,

I believe you can do it with "any" Vista installation DVD.

Failing that you may need to restore Vista to a previously saved recovery or to the factory condition off a recovery partition if you have not deleted it.

You can actually boot Vista now with a Linux Live CD. Steps are described in here.

All MS Dos and Windows can be booted without its MBR manually by Grub. You can put Grub alone on any floppy, USB pen drvie, CD/DVD, external hard disk, internal hard drive and boot it as the boot loader for firing up Vista. If you don't have time to do that, an operation of copying just two files, you can get Grub ready-made from some Linux Live CDs.

There is another method too. If you cannot restore Vista's MBR, for whatever reason, you can make a small primary partition, put Grub inside and use it as the permanent boot loader for Vista. This thread shows how it can be done for firing up two Vista! There is no need to install a Linux. Grub in available in many Live CD and Ubuntu has it.

Despite all the years I have tried I have not found an installed PC operating system that cannot be booted up by Grub using just a floppy.

Ok, thank you very much.

I'm going to borrow a Vista CD from someone.
