Solved: Ubuntu 8.10 programs
I just installed Ubuntu 8.10. This isn't my first time using a linux, but I never really understood the program system to begin with. I downloaded and extracted Sunbird for linux from Mozilla'a website. I thought it had something to do with the .SH and .BIN files, but i can't get either of them to do anything.

Sunbird

How To install

What do I actually have to do to get it to run?
What command/file(s) do I have to run?

Try the command:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ which sunbird
where "ubuntu@ubuntu:~$" is the prompt for the regular user ubuntu, in order to find out where the sunbird executable is located, i.e. it should be in one of your $PATH variable directory paths.

To execute sunbird, it may be as simple as executing:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sunbird

I'm thinking the OP is still trying to get Sunbird installed.

The link posted above is to the tarball used to distribute Sunbird. A "tarball" is logically similar to a ZIP file (at least for the time being think of it as such).

Sunbird doesn't come with an "installer", per se, so choose a place where you want to install it and uncompress it there. To keep things simple, install Sunbird in your home directory, like this:

(Open a terminal window first then type the commands below).

$ tar zxf sunbird-0.9.en-US.linux-i686.tar.gz

That will create a "sunbird" directory in your home directory. If you saved sunbird-0.9.en-US.linux-i686.tar.gz to your desktop, use this command instead:

$ tar zxf Desktop/sunbird-0.9.en-US.linux-i686.tar.gz

Then, to run sunbird, use this command:

$ sunbird/sunbird &

To add sunbird to your PATH so that Thunderbird can find it, do this:

$ gedit ~/.baschrc

Once in gedit, add these lines to the end:

PATH=$PATH:~/sunbird
export PATH

Then save the .bashrc file. Now, when you login to the system, "sunbird" should be part of your PATH and Thunderbird should be able to find it.

However, you should see if Sunbird is in any Ubuntu repositories. Look for Sunbird in the Ubuntu Synaptic Package Manager. If it's there, install it that way since it will be easier for you.

Lastly, there are instructions for installing Sunbird on the Ubuntu forums but the above steps should work if you choose not to install using Synaptic.

Peace...

Thanks for all the help.
I tried that a couple times, but I seem to be typing wrong or something.

But I found that Wine fully supports the windows installation of Sunbird, so that made it a lot easier. It runs flawlessly, except slightly longer loading times on most things.
