 | Member with 33 posts. | | Join Date: May 2002 Location: Houston TX | | Error On Installation of Mandrake 7.0.2 I am trying to install Mandrake 7.0.2, it start going well but
at the makedisk point or boot strip I get that error:
Installation of LILO falied, the following error occured
start /dev/fd0:No such file or directory
any help will do
arik | | Senior Member with 1,410 posts. | | | | It sounds as though the installation expects a device node (/dev/fd0) to be present but cannot find it (note that the file is fd-zero not fd-capital-O). This file corresponds to your (first) floppy drive. If your system does not include a floppy (or it is not working correctly), you could receive this error.
Note that this step just installs LILO to a floppy disk in order to create a boot disk; your installation is probably fine. You might try booting Linux from the hard drive and see what happens; if you can boot Linux, you can always make a boot disk later.
Hope this helps.

I try to install again and this time I didn't pick to make a floppy
bootdisk, I then move on and got 2nd error:
Installation of LILO falied, the following error occured
open /dev/hda :No such file or directory
do I have to make that directory before, or how do i do that
I have a clean hard drive.
Thanks again
arik | | Senior Member with 1,410 posts. | | | | The /dev/hda device refers to your (first) hard disk (i.e., the one configured as master on the first IDE channel). If you have an IDE drive in your system, it should be recognized. If you have a SCSI drive, it should also be recognized, but the device will change slightly (/dev/sda for the first SCSI device). However, since you've had errors for both /dev/fd0 and /dev/hda, I'd suspect a problem with the installation (corrrupted media, incorrect parameters, etc.) rather than a hardware problem. If you could post the details of your system configuration, that might give a clue.
Any info appreciated.

I was out of town, sorry for the late respond
I am using a custom build computer with that setting :
-Intel Celeron 1GHz / 100MHz Bus Processor
-IBM DeskStar 30.7GB, 7200rpm Hard Drive
-256 MB SDRAM PC133/PC100
-e-geforce mx 32mb video card
-400w power supply
-sony 15" monitor
I did try that on 3 more computers, same error
I am using cd that is a copy of Mandrake 7.0.2, I was able to load
that only one time long time ago.
do I have to do something to the hard drive before the installation or it's should be automatic ?
Thank you

hi guy I've 2 ideas
1] did you change bios to CD rom is boot device?
2]set bios to initiate pnp, something like OS will initiate pnp [no]
hope this helps Steve | | Senior Member with 1,410 posts. | | | | If you have tried the same CD on 3 other computers and they also failed, I suspect you have a problem either with the media itself or the distribution (some versions of Mandrake had installation problems). One other idea to try: if you can make a boot floppy, this might solve your problem; instead of booting from the CD, boot from the floppy and begin the installation that way. I believe the CD contains info on creating the boot floppy. Also, if you have a choice of kernels, try choosing a different one and see if you have better luck.
Hope this helps.

I did try with Floppy, it went thru fine untill it stops with that error
right at the LILO option part, any idea ?
do I have to do something on my hard drive ?
Thanks
Arik | | Senior Member with 1,410 posts. | | | | As long as your hard drive is recognized in your BIOS, there's nothing else you need to do. I believe Mandrake partitions the drive during installation and creates any needed filesystems. The fact that you receive both a hard drive and floppy drive error suggests that the problem is not your hard drive. I'd guess that the installation is confused about what to use for the root filesystem, and therefore it looks in the wrong place and fails to find /dev/fd0 and /dev/hda. Both of these are device nodes that should be already defined in your distribution -- you don't have to create them yourself.
Are you set on this version of Mandrake? Perhaps a more recent version might work better; you can download one here: http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/ftp...4d8a420553.php
Hope this helps.
