HP LaserJet in RedHat 7.2
Three days ago I didn't know anything about Linux, now I'm trying to configure a HP LaserJet 4000 with a JetDirect card. I folllowed the supposed procedure: printconf, choose name, jetdirect printer, private ip assigned (10.10.10.100: my printer address) port by default (9100), printer driver (tried with HP LaserJet 4000 and with Postscript); and the only thing I get after restarting the lpd service and sending a test is a message saying "There was an error trying to print the test page". This box has two NICS (it'a a proxy server). I need someone who can tell me (please, remember, I'm new at Linux) how to install this printer... TIA

OK -- I'm not a RedHat guy, but I can think of a few things to check out:

(1) try pinging the IP address of the printer; if you can't reach it, there's at least some of the problem.
(2) use the following command to verify that port 9100 is open and is being listened on: netstat -an | more If port 9100 is open and being listened on, you will see a line similar to:

tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:9100 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN

If you don't see something close to this, the printer may not be listening on port 9100 for print requests. The netstat -an command will show you all open ports on your machine; you can also use netstat -a | more to display the services associated with each port, if these are defined.
(3) you may need to add a route to the printer if your NICs are on different networks.
(4) as root, type lpc at the command line. At the prompt, type status and see what the spooling system thinks is happening with the printer. You can use q or quit to get out.

Post back with your results if you have a chance to try any of these, and we'll go from there.

Hope this helps.

I GOT IT!!!..... The f***ing host file didn't have a "localhost" entry. I realized 'cause the lpd was giving an error at shutdown, and starting it manually I got "Get_local_host ip address not valid"; thanks to the eternal Google I resolve it. Thanks anyway, code.
