Unhappy Linux virus scanner for PC files?
I got a pretty nasty virus on my Windows XP operating system. Luckily, i had a Ubuntu Linux disk laying around, and i am running it from the disk, and it is working great.

What i want to know is, if there is a virus scanner for linux (Or one for windows that can work in wine) that can fix my Windows Xp Operating system.

I can still access all my windows files and hard drives, so i think i could at least fix them.

Yes. clamav or for a graphic front end, clamtk. They should both be in the repositories.

I don't think so. You should attempt to do this in a Windows environment.

Well, the virus is stopping me from logging into windows, so this is the only choice i have at the moment. If you know any other solutions though, they would be helpful.

Avira has a rescue system which I think is a Linux live CD with their anti-virus app installed. There are other solutions similar to this one as well.

You might be better off going with one of these pre-built solutions.

Another option might be to put your hard drive in an external hard drive enclosure and scan it on a system with good anti-virus and anti-spyware tools on it.

Yet another option is to start a thread in the malware removal forum asking for assistance, since you can't really access Windows right now. They might have ideas of viable options for you.

Peace...

Linux does not use ntfs filing system so it is unreasonable to expect Linux to offer something that it never uses. Although that doesn't stop people from offering a fix but it would not be a standard issue with a distro.

It is like asking a car dealer for a car that comes with a set of horse shoes as an optional extra so that the owner can renew the shoes for his/her horses in an emergency.

Ubuntu stops the virus by not giving the root account to its users. Without the root privilege (admin rights in Windoze) outside virus cannot affect any of the Linux system files because only the owner is allow to change them.
