Arrow What to do when freezing
I know that linux systems rarely freeze. I tried to install a program, which I shouldn't have tried, in Wine. When I launch the program, the program starts but in no time Fedora 9 freezes (Can't move the cursor and keyboard seems to be stuck as well). I just want to know whether there is a way to close the opened program so that I could work in other things without restarting the PC from pressing the restart button.
Task Manager in windows could do this at least for certain cases. It would be at least response for the Ctrl+Alt+Del. Is there a key combination in Fedora 9 which would response to whatever app ?

Hi 060456F,

You should learn to use the Advanced Search feature of Search this Forum link and by searching for threads I (lotuseclat79) have started you would then discover the thread Don't hit the power button if Linux freezes up!.

Read all of the posts in that thread, especially the last one by me, then print out the referenced articles.

Just yesterday, I had to consult my hard copy printouts because I tried to move a new RSS feed (typically positioned at the end of the list instead of alphabetically sorted) too quickly and Firefox 3.0.6 frooze up everything - I could not even use Force Quit.

So, I quickly found my printout of Keyboard Shortcuts and use my scriblle of Alt+Ctrl+F1 which opened up a full screen command line window (non-graphical) from which I issued the kill -9 command for the Firefox processes that frooze the system. Then the problem was how to get back into the graphical display environment. Luckily, the printout from Linux keyboard shortcuts - 2.0 had the answer, i.e. Ctrl+Alt+F7 which switches back to the Gui display environment because if you have the X window system running, it runs in the 7th virtual terminal by default.

Another reference for Firefox is Keyboard shortcuts.

Results may vary with different Linux distributions, but for the most part they should be fairly consistent in this area. Search the Fedora forums and website for "keyboard shortcuts" for other potential references and "Magic SysRq key" about what to do if your system "freezes up" and nothing works.

Lightbulb Awesome!
Thanks a lot lotuseclat79. It was a great tip to remember forever. Both the links above were so helpful.
One of your earlier thread was also interesting to read. namenotfound's idea was not too bad. I have also seen the "force quit" in the add to panel menu in Ubuntu. I think it will be useful if you know the cause of death.
Any way I'm happy to study something new in this morning here. And I don't understand the reason why linux books doesn't frankly state about such great tips.

Thanks again.
