Solved: Problems with Samba File Server on Ubuntu Server 8.10
I'm relatively new to Linux and I'm trying to configure Samba File Server on Ubuntu Server 8.10. I want to be able to access it and store files on it from a Windows XP computer and I followed this tutorial, but whenever I try to access the server (it shows up in workgroup computers) I get the error message

"\\Sambafileserver is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The network path was not found."

I have a feeling that I don't have something configured correctly in the smb.conf file, but since I don't know that much about Linux, I have come here seeking assistance. Thanks in advance.

Well, post the part of the smb.conf file for the shared directory (step 2 in the directions).

Also, did you uncomment "security = user" (step 1)?

And does removing the # in front of "security = user" uncomment it?

That sure looks good. And, yes, removing the # uncomments the line.

Before we get too far into trying to find a mistake, did you reboot Ubuntu after making the sharing changes? Sometimes that kind of a change doesn't take effect until after a reboot and that's not always mentioned.

You did create the directory (folder) and set the permissions, right?

I reset Ubuntu but I'm still getting the error message. The directory is created but I haven't set user permissions for it. Could you explain how to set that up? The tutorial I read didn't specify setting up users and user permissions for the directory.

When I skimmed through the instructions you used I just assumed that step 3 did permissions. Now that I've actually read it, I've never seen the owner changed the way they show in that chown.

Anyhow, to give everybody full permissions to the directory ...

sudo chmod 777 /srv/samba/share

If you want to give write permission to only the owner use

sudo chmod 755 /srv/samba/share

Finally got it working. Turns out I had something set up wrong with the NIC . Thanks for your help .
