Install Ubunto 8.10
I have an old laptop running windows XP and decided to change the operating system to Linux.
I got the installation cd for Ubuntu but even though the installation seems to run smoothly, in the end I get the desktop with no icons on it and the computer freezes completely.

I have tried the cd on another laptop and it works fine there.
Is it possible that my old laptop cannot run the cd? And for what reason since it runs fine the XP cd?
Any suggestion?
The laptop is a Compaq presario 1200
Thank you

I would recommend ditching the Ubuntu (some linux peeps will now accuse me of blasphemy) but with that laptop I'd suggest using Ulteo Polaris. It installs well on older machines, plus its feature rich. I've heard of a lot of people having trouble with ubuntu on older machines. You can download the ISO for free on www.distrowatch.com

How much memory? I had XP on my 128 MB laptop but Ubuntu needs more. I tried Xubuntu and that seemed OK at first but then degraded, I think because of memory problems or maybe it just didn't like the hardware.
