Ubuntu disconnects when another computer is in use.
Hello,
I have been having a issue recently that i haven't had before.
Whenever another computer goes online in my house, i get disconnected from the internet, even though it does not say that i have, instead, firefox will say in the bottom left "Looking up_____.com", and i no internet application works, such as IM or games, and i need to disable the network then re-enable it, and if someone is still using the another computer, this will happen about 30 seconds to a minute.

This is a huge problem when it comes to downloading things, watching videos, and talking to people.

Is there any way i can stop this?

the network manager in ubuntu 8.1 has been having some issues with static ip.
How many computer do u have at home? do u have a router? is this a laptop wireless connection or wired desktop connection.
One last thing:
open your terminal & type this command
sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces.conf
please copy the results & paste here.

I'm pretty sure I'm using 8.1.
There are about 4 other working computers in the house.
My laptop is plugged into a wireless router

Results:
GNU nano 2.0.7 File: /etc/network/interfaces.conf

It sounds to me like an IP address confilict on your network. After you boot to Ubuntu, try unplugging the power from your modem/router, wait 15 seconds, then plug in the modem, wait 15 seconds and then plug the router in and wait for it to come back online.

This is assuming you have a router of course

If you're hooked directly to your modem, boot to Ubuntu, make sure your Ubuntu network is set up for DHCP, and then power cycle your modem (unplug power for 15 seconds then plug back in).

see ubuntu 8.10 has a network manager & it's very picky.. you can say that it has a mind of it own. it seems to me like a modem connection... user has 2 pcs connected to modem oe via eithernet & the second via usb. (DOES NOT WORK)
or has a router, but ubuntu does not have the proper driver for the NIC installed. either way, he/she need to coe back with some info
