PS3 Linux
Hi there,
Recently I have got a ps3 and I am now contemplating as to weather or not I should install a Linux.
Now, before I go into detail I must confess that, well my hardware knowlege is large, my extent of linux is just about typing in sudosu and lspci...
I have never bothered to learn the code, because I have never had need of it so please dont tell me complex code commands.
Ok, so, here goes,
I'd like to keep with something that I know, so an ubuntu version on the ps3 would be good if it exists. If this is not possible, then fedora would also be good, as my friend runs it on his pc, although im open to suggestions.
Secondly, can I install wine on a ps3 and use it as a gaming pc as well. It will need more RAM, but i can imagine that its 8 3.4ghz cores will do well, as well as 512mb of dedicated video memory. mmmmm!
Thanks all in the linux community
James!

Hi James,

You can begin your investigation here: Linux on the PlayStation 3.

Yes, Ubuntu on PS3 exists, as does Fedora and others. If you can install Linux on a PS3, it should be possible to also install Wine as evidenced by the Wine emulator here: Playstation 3 Linux Files.

Keep us informed of your progress in this exciting endeavor, i.e. the Cell processor is a fantastic innovation! Great choice!

Thanks guys, will keep you informed.
So, step 1:
Getting the HDD ready....
I have a 40gb HDD built in, but should I replace that or just network the playstation to our network. I will only be allocating 5-10gb to linux, BUT will have my portable HDD 160gb plugged in at all times.
I think ill go with the ubuntu, really wanna see how this handles high end games like crysis!
Cheers
James
