Take a look at Puppy Linux or Vector Linux.

I had good luck with Vector on a similar machine a couple of years ago.

By "good luck" I mean the performance was amazing.

How to choose the best Linux distro for you

From my personal quest to find an OS last year for my 128 MB 400 GHz laptop I'd also suggest Puppy Linux and also DSL.

Hang on, just had a thought, isnt Xubuntu meant to run well on pcs with that sort os spec?
It ran well on my dads 450mhz pentium 2, so well that my sister still uses it as her everyday computer to check her bebo, youtube, myspace etc. As well as doing homework on it!
She complains when other computers that we have around the house running things such as vista are slower than her pentium 2 running xubuntu!

CentOS!

It's a pretty good RHEL clone.
Debian distros be damned!

[OPINION]

If you MUST run Debian, use kubuntu.
I run Ximian, Kate, and Konqueror,
all under KDE.
But of course I run Redhat - not Debian.
Who needs Gnome, anymore, anyway?

CentOS ROCKS!

KDE Rules!

Kubuntu won't get off the ground with 128ram 233mhz.

Xubuntu, as gatewaypc700 said, may be a good choice. I tried it with my 128 MB ram and it at first seemed to be the perfect answer for me. Then when I started to update it it slowed horribly. I guessed (after the 3rd attempt) that the cause was some incompatibility between the OS and my hardware; my Systemax laptop gave me decent service, but seemed to be thrown together with cheap parts nobody else wanted.

Have you tried clicking the "install" icon at the top of the screen? If that's not the right one, try "setup."

Yes, you can install all versions of Linux which you can run on an old PC with 64MB ram minimum and 5GB hard disk. There are many Linux Flavor which you can get downloaded for free of cost. The os like Gentoo,Debian ,Linux, FreeBSD, etc...I hope this will help you to install Linux.

Unwin, most of those os's you have sugested will run slowly. Read the other posts. Puppy linux, or vector linux or xubuntu are all good suggestions for a bad pc.

If you cant install vector, xubuntu is a free download!
