Ubuntu vs WIndows 7 (not a debate on which is better)
I had a thought when checking out the Windows 7 RTM. Ubuntu and other linux distros try to be all inclusive OS, media player, office software, games, etc. Windows 7 is basicaly just an OS with nothing else. It seems that Microsoft has taken the opposite stand of Linux. Microsoft has actually made an effort to remove features from Windows 7.

So how has the better approach then Microsoft or the Linux community? More importantly do you use the included software with an OS anyway?

To answear my own questions. I like the stripped down approach that Microsoft is taking since I like to choose the programs I use. I do use IE and Widnows Explorer but I use VLC, Foobar 2000, Nero and Office as replacement for built in programs.

Noobs are the only ones that seem to get stuck using the software that comes with the OS since they often don't know better option are out there.

Ubuntu isn't Linux. Just one distro.
Therefore, Linux has the better system, since you can start with a kernel, or start with a full blown OS with apps included. The choice is yours.

Hi RootbeaR, Lawson_jl,
For the ordinary user, who does not really want to 'get into' such things as kernels, and designing a complete system with applications, it is probably welcome when everything is nicely packaged together and you only have to fine tune it a bit. I liked that with my Kubuntu 8.04.1 LTS (Hardy Heron). My Vista and XP came with some fair extra software, but I did not use it. I had to add Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Photoshop whereas with my Linux Kubuntu I downloaded a few extras (all free) and had a powerful system the way I want it.

Since my XP and Vista came preloaded and I have none of the origianl CDs in case I need to re-install for some reason, then this makes Microsoft the less desirable Operating Systems (also more viruses aimed at MS).
Linux, I can always download a free distro or upgrade to the newest release.

some linux distros have a fair amount of preloaded software.
some never gets used..just the same with ms.
they are merely pushing points..so the applications menu isnt empty.
i like the approach of go get your own to reply to your question.
this can suck for dial up users though

You also have in your title not a debate on which is better then ask which is better.

I still say Linux. You can start with TinyMe and end up with PCLinuxOS or even more.

Look at it this way.

M$ W7 2-3GB, no extra programs to do anything.

Ubuntu 700MB, lots of programs to satisfy many users.

Windows is becoming more "stripped down" largely due to all the lawsuits that prevent them from including software with the OS. Many Linux distros (as RootbeaR points out, and it is an important, often-ignored fact, that "Linux" is not an operating system, but a kernel only for 1000's of OS's) have started packaging things with the OS that makes it convenient to some, but it really is just someone else choosing your software for you. It is "bundling" no matter how you cut it.

I like the operating system to be a base upon which software is run. I have never bought a computer that had an OS installed because I want it my own way and not filled with junk that I don't want, purchased desktop real estate from manufacturers that boils down to ads. They catch you when you buy the machine and then tell you months later that it's time to pay for it.

I didn't intend to nitpick your title, sorry.

Was just trying to clarify that Linux isn't done just one way. Which is why I think it is better. Choice!
