Solved: Running Ubuntu Problems / Only 1/4 Screen
For some reason, whenever I run Ubuntu, it only takes up roughly one 1/4 of the screen. (like it only shows one fourth of ubuntu, and the rest is black)

I have no idea what my be the problem. At first, when I installed Ubuntu from a disk, the setup was normal. Then, when I ran it, it had the problem.

So I tried to uninstall it, (and had to do some dirty partition work), and install it again. NOW, the setup is 1/4 the screen!

Thinking it was my disk's problem, I tried to install it with Wubi. Now, EVEN with Wubi, it won't work!!!

IT seems that anything that has to do with running Ubuntu shows up as only 1/4 the screen. I tried LiveCD boot, and the problem was the same.

I am running (or attempting to run) v9.04

Is it a bug, or something? Can you PLEASE help?

P.S. If there is some confusion, it is not that the resolution is one fourth. It is that only one fourth of Ubuntu is showing, the rest is black.

It is likely to be a mismatch of the video driver, the monitor scanning rates, selected display mode not supported by the hardware or a combination of several factors.

Don't know the solution for the latest Ubuntu myself because it seems to be switching to a new type X-window configuration

Ok, do u think installing another distro might help?

I think I might want to try Kubuntu.

I'm aiming toward the "ubuntu" series and then move onto Fedora when I get more advanced.

It seems that my problem is very unique. Everybody is blaming it on the resolution, but I'm pretty sure that's not the problem

Definitely try a few other distros. I would stay away from the Ubuntu family as they all use the same hardware detection programs and xorg. Something like Mandriva, Mepis, Slax, Fedora and Open Suse.

Here is my Ubuntu configuration file (only the lines with a # in front are acted upon, showed blue below)
Code:
saikee@saikee-desktop:~$ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# Note that some configuration settings that could be done previously
# in this file, now are automatically configured by the server and settings
# here are ignored.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Section "Device"
	Identifier	"Configured Video Device"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
	Identifier	"Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
	Identifier	"Default Screen"
	Monitor "Configured Monitor"
	Device "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

K thx!

I'll stay away from ubuntu for now.

Fedora's probably my best bet.

BTW, is Mandriva dead? I want to try it out but: www.tuxmachines.org/node/33058, http://www.gnuman.com/the-news/39-li...riva-dead.html

*cry*

You know what? Same thing happened with openSUSE

Setup was fine, the boom. Only one-fourth screen. What could be the problem?

I'm starting to think my computer can't run Linux, period. Though it is a likely conclusion, there is not much reason for it. Why? is the question.

What I did was "auto-configure" my monitor. Works perfectly! Thx!
