bsod while trying to installing xp!
I have installed ubuntu 9.04 and am now trying to install xp on another partition
I have created an ntfs partition and backed up my boot sector. then i tried to install xp but it comes up with a blue screen saying:

check for viruses on your computer. remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. run chkdsk/f to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

this message came up before i had created the ntfs partition and was planning to just install xp, then ubuntu afterwards (before i knew that doesn't work!)

help! thanks in advance

Does your Xp installation disc has SP3?

A lot of the hardware problems can be solved by slipstreaming the SP3 into the installation disc. Do a Google it is widely written on the subject.

will it take care of the sata driver problem often encountered?

I can't be sure of that. The SP2 upward can see beyond the 137Gb barrier in a hard disk though.

If the installer can't see your hard disk because of no Sata driver it would say so and you can always feed it with one.

What I have been convinced is that Xp disc sold at early days could not equip with drivers coping with many new hardware since come out and M$ for commercial reason cannot replace the installation disc. The blue screen is just to divert the user thinking there is something wrong with his/her own equipment and nothing to do with M$ whereas the opposite is true.

I think you are right that it is a sata driver issue. it seems to be a common problem because xp didn't come with sata drivers apparently so obviously it won't work without them.

I've downloaded n-lite to make an xp cd including the drivers--but i can't work out what the right drivers are. where do i find them? i've googled a lot without success.
The computer is a compaq presario cq61-107TU
many thanks

I have done it but made some coasters,,its been a while.I have done a reformatsince and no longer have that bookmark where i got the driver,
intel has them on their site but it is rough navigation there.
the next time i went to xp i jumped from xp home without any services packs to xp pro sp2,so i didnt use my previous slipstreamed cd
i rather went into bios and cet my hd settings to ide from ahci, the slipsream isnt needed this way and is available as an option with some setups in order to install xp.
you will lose about 2 percent performance with your hd this way however, which to me is worth it,to save the hassle of doing the slip stream again.
