Question Solved: Extracting files in Unrar
Hi peeps!

I've checked so many forums about it but I seem to be doing something wrong with how I type the file path. Here's the situation:

I want to use unrar to extract an .rar file to one of my folders. what exactly should I type in the terminal?

details: my file's name is ABCD.rar and it's currently located in my desktop. now I know the command unrar x filename.rar thingy... but the thing is I ain't got a clue how to type the file path there at the terminal.

I did the /home/myubuntuusername/desktop/ABCD.rar didn't work. I did the /myubuntuusername/desktop/ABCD.rar, didn't work. I did the dekstop/ACBD.rar, didn't work. Now I'm guessing there's just simply a different way to access the file path. I just need what exactly will I type in my terminal.

please help. Thanks.

Did you do a 'man' on rar? One of the most helpful commands is the man command. If you type 'man unrar' at a command prompt it will give you a detailed manual on how to use the unrar command. I have never used unrar but my guess on the full command would be 'unrar filename.rar /home/username/' which will extract files to your home directory.

When you open a Terminal you're probably in your home directory. Do pwd to check.

In the attached screenshot (if this works; my first Linux attempt) an ls of my home directory shows that the folder I'd want if I were you is Desktop (case matters).

So your file is probably Desktop/ABCD.rar

Hi thanks for the help I finally got it right. Unfortunately unrar said that the rar file I'm trying to open is encrypted and that I need a password for it (which is weird cause I can easily access that rar file before with Winrar).

Anyway at least I'm not going bonkers in how to use it anymore .

Thanks guys for the help.
