Question Debian hangs after just booting up
Hi guys,

I am currently on a Debian box. I had used "su" in order to create and delete some files, when the power went out. Unfortunately, the box that I had been supplied with didn't have a UPS system.
Now when I tried rebooting it, the startup screen appears, it moves on to choosing the Linux version(GNU/Linux(smp)) and starts uncompressing linux. This is where it hangs and the CPU shuts down. At other times, it hangs at one of the intermediate stages I mentioned adn the CPU shuts down.I think it may be due to a sector going bad. But I needed your opinion a to what might have gone wrong. Any chance that I can recover the files that I had?
Please provide any help you can.

Thanks,
Bharat.

Hi again,

I tried booting off a live CD(Ubuntu) but it didn't work. Does this mean that it is a problem with the machine. If yes, any idea how i can recover the contents of the disk?

Thanks,
Bharat.
