Talking Knoppix Fraud and Networking Problems
To start, I am using Knoppix downloaded from a torrent posted on the official Knoppix website. HOWEVER I am NOT the LEAST BIT computer savy so when I see a Tutorial I follow it WORD FOR WORD VERBATIM.

Of course things rarely work out how I want them to, and as such I am back to my old haven when I was upgrading to Windows Vista.

I could have solved my problem like I did before, buy a new computer that actually WORKS. But seeing as how there are pretty much NO computers on the market that run on Linux, I figured I would have to upgrade the old-fashioned way. I ripped the ISO, burned it accordingly, changed the settings on my BIOS to load CD Boot images before the HD and I got Linux.

It was, however, NOT Knoppix as I had intended and I soon was experiencing all of the nightmares of my old computer. When I couldn't go to Vista before, I tried Knoppix, only it worked because I bought a CD with Knoppix on it (For about $2). The new system I had didn't have the tell-tale "Gear with a 'K' on it" symbol. It instead had a hideous slash mark that I think was intended to be an "A". Not only are the pictures changed, but the menu's are too as well as some programs. So my question is: How do I set up internet on The new Knoppix?

EDIT: After some "Wiki-ing" I found that symbol was an "X" as in "LXDE".

I am NOT directly connecting to the internet via Cable/DSL but instead I am using a Network Adaptor. I am using a "Belkin 'N' Adapter" that goes in through the USB. I don't know the IP of the computer I connect through and I am currently using Vista to access the internet. Where can I find an old copy of Knoppix and/or how do I setup my internet on this fraudulent copy of Linux and change the Icon back?

P.S. How can I save my settings on Knoppix/Any Linux OS without formatting my HD in the process? I can install Linux to my HD at the cost of all my precious Photoshop projects/50+ GB of important non-refundable data?

THANKS TO ANYONE WHO CAN EVEN STOMACH TO READ THIS WHOLE THING!

P.P.S. Sorry for the sarcasm mixed around through out

.... sorry 'bout that - thought it useful ... moving on ... while waiting for more advice from others, can you backup all the important data that you mention to external storage media such as usb or cdr? At least that'll prevent data loss while you get other things sorted.

Try downloading the Desktop version of Knoppix from The LiveCD List.

Size is generally about 700MB. Best to use one of the mirrors close to your location.

I ran totally out of CDs and I lost my USB. I also don't have an external drive. Still, thank you for some REAL advice this time

I guess, I'm really NOT to concerned with the appearance of Knoppix, I really just wanted internet access. Thank you anyways,

EDIT: How do I get the Desktop Version? It only takes me to a bunch of mirrors for the Boot CD. ALSO I found out that that "slash" symbol is an "X" as in, "LXDE".

I don't know anything specific to Knoppix, so I'm speaking only in generalities ...

Your internet access problem is likely that you do not have a Linux driver for your wireless adapter. See my post in your companion Ubuntu thread.

Some (many?) Linux distributions can be used with various GUIs, or Desktop Environments. LXDE is a "lightweight" desktop environment, and your version of Knoppix probably includes others to which you can switch. Or there are others available for downloading and installing. I suspect that there is some Knoppix documentation on the topic. Here's one small bit of info.

Thank you, but I think I may be moving farther away from Knoppix and more towards Ubuntu. Sorry but I'm a sucker for aesthetics (Compiz Fusion is sooooo cool). I do appreciate the help though, thanks again

I might check it out. Right now I'm h311-bent on getting Ubuntu and Knoppix functional mostly because Knoppix is referred to as "The Beginner's Linux" (I forget where from, don't scold me) and because I actually got Ubuntu to boot and save onto my HD (I hate how Linux resets everytime I log onto my PC.

I also have to pick up some more blank CD's but I will check it out. Thanks again dude, I'm very grateful everyone, thank you again, please also check out my "Sister Topic" which I think is honestly making MORE progress with fewer posts (in part thanks to google and what little reasoning skill I have). I would be even MORE appreciative .

Ignore the petty bickering scattered throughout (my fault, no sarcasm) and please focus on the problem, I'm really jealous of those YouTubers who can show of their Compiz-Fusion Cube thingy
