Solved: How can i completely wipe out windows for this installation?
Yes i just got this 8.10 from a friend who had received it from the mail for free, im very new to this ''a first timer'' and i want to install this with nothing left of windows. This windows xp is pretty much destroyed so i wont be needing any trace of it ,i know this is possible but i do not understand the necessary steps for this type of installation.

In the installation process it will ask how much of the disk it should use. Just tell it to use the whole disk.

Hi,
If it's Ubuntu, the current version is (I think) 9.04 so the one you install as described by arochester might do lots of updates or suggest an upgrade.
I'm in the process of migrating from Vista to Mint and learning lots about Linux.

This is Ubuntu 8.10 desk top edition ,this was installed on my brothers computer the previous day and yes it did update to the current in hours.
If this is something i can get used to it will replace my vista.

Every Linux comes with several partitioning tools. cfdisk and fdisk are among the 99.99% of the distros.

Just use either one to nuke all the partitions. Take only seconds. And then fire up the installer.

I quite like using script to do things.

This script typed at any Ubuntu terminal will erase everything in a hard disk device sdb
Code:
sudo fdisk /dev/sdb << eof
> d
> 1
> d
> 2
> d
> 3
> d
> 4
> w
> eof
If the hard disk has a 100 logical partition it will still disappear after each of the 4 reserved primary partitions have been deleted.

There is a lot of fun in using the terminal.
