New OS derived from BeOS - Haiku Alpha 1 (for the adventureous only)
Haiku Project Announces Availability of Haiku R1/Alpha 1

Haiku is not internally related to Unix or Linux, but is open source and derived from BeOS (which has POSIX compatibility and access to a command line interface through Bash).

Download .iso image: Get Haiku!.

You are advised to first get the FAQ, slides and User Guide, Relase Notes and Installation Guide (from the Haiku Project webpage, and read them over before getting the .iso image (you know what to do with it: burn it to CD)! Note: iso, vm, and raw images are all .zip files and must be unzip'd for use.

Experience: A Linux user gone nuts on multi-boot

Don't think I am an adventureous type but any PC operating system that claims to be ready does wet my apetite.

Downloaded it, extracted the iso image and burnt it into a CD with a Ubuntu.

Put it into a i7 box but the Haiku didn't like the video card.

Took it to another Intel E6700 box with geforce 7600GT video card and it went straight in. Just picked a spare hard disk disk, booted up the Haiku CD and used its installer to delete a primary partition and installed it. There was a box to click to put the boot loader in the root partition (not MBR) so I opted for it.

Rebooted, slipped in a Grub floppy and booted up Haiku exactly like what I expected.

Very much like a Linux but all the commands are different. It fired up the network card so I used it to post this reply.

Well done saikee!

It would appear you underestimate your proclivity for adventure, eh?

Hands-on: Haiku, the future of BeOS, is pure poetry.

The Haiku project, which aims to build a binary-compatible open source reimplementation of BeOS, has announced the availability of its first alpha release. Ars puts it to the test to see how it compares with the authentic BeOS experience.
