Don't get me going on about XFree86! My first/last attempt, I was very lucky I read the documentation and backed up the important directories prior to toasting my KDE Fedora environment for FC3. Rereading the documentation and simply taring the directories back saved my environment - which before I resurrected it was workable but fairly well brain dead for a GUI as I was limited to terminal windows - nothing I couldn't work around, but not as convenient to use IYKWIM.
