Linux has never been immune to viruses. The big bit that stops them being widespread is the security of the means by which people get their software - there's no trawling the net for something that looks right as in Windows, you go to the repos and get stuff from the OS manufacturer. But you've always been able to explicitly install and run a piece of malware under Linux.

Wine's been able to run viruses for a long time, what's new about this one?

Here is what seems to be the definitive article on Bliss (AKA the Linux virus).

It was enough to get McAfee talking. I was only ten at the time but I wish I had been old enough to hear about this as it was going on. :-).
