??? Is cp task still in process???
Question is, "Is the cp task still ongoing?

What happened:

I had a device copy task started an hour or so earlier, and I opened up a game of 'Freecell'. In the middle of a card move, the cursor froze. No response from the mouse. The touchpad DOES navigate the cursor, but no double click or right click function, no game function works, no response from 'Force quit' icon, no 'Shut Down' icon response, nothing. I tried pinging the machine from another machine in the house, no response.

Now I'm ready to Crtl + Alt + Bckspc , to restart X-Server. BUT, I do NOT want to interrupt the device copy if it is still running.

I executed the device copy from a command line/terminal (cp /dev/sdc1 /dev/sdd1). Both disks are in the same external enclosure on a USB channel.

If the X-server is locked up, can I know that the copy task is still in process, since I started the copy task in a CLI??? Does that make a difference?

MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION: If the copy is still in process, would it stop if I restarted the X-server???

Short of a definitive answer, I can wait for several hours, to restart X. The device that's copying is a 400G partition...
