The first place to check should be the .Trash folder. (If you use nautilus or something like that, be sure to 'Show Hidden Files'; if you are using the command line 'ls -lsah' in your home directory will show you the .Trash folder.)

Hi vschitturi,

How did the .Trash folder look? Did you find your files?

The first thing to remember is that a file delete operation does not really delete the files from the hard disk file system. It does remove the inode which is a file system construct that points to the place on hard disk where the file resides. The key thing is that if you have just lost your files, don't do anything else until the issue is addressed.

The best thing to do is to not save any other files, and to ghost or clone your hard drive to another drive that is the same size or bigger, then work on the clone so the original drive is intact.

Here is an article that may help Recovering Lost Data On Linux Or Unix Using The Coroner's Toolkit (TCT) and at the end of that arcticle is a follow on article, Making Use Of Lazarus' Web Interface On Linux Or Unix.

Please let us know if either helps. If not, and your RH5.3 desktop system is an ext3 filesystem then you have a journaled file system that can be hacked (with lots of effort) to hopefully bring back your files.

I posted a thread which referenced an article on doing the ext3 journal file recovery in this forum, How to undelete removed files and directories on an ext3 file system.
