can you in ubuntu uninstall the driver for the printer completely
In windows you would do the following
Quote:
Right-click the printer, point to Run as administrator, and then click Server Properties. Or, press ALT, click Run as Administrator on the File menu, and then click Server Properties.
Click the Drivers tab.
Click the printer that you want to update, and then click Remove.
Then re-install the 8-10 driver

In Ubuntu (any version), click on System>Administration>Printing. If a window with an icon for a printer shows, then double-click on the icon and reset the Options to Letter, and then to Gray-scale for black ink printing instead of color printing. If there are no printers configured as a result of booting up, and you have a printer connected to the computer, then select the New button in the window and select the Forward button to let it search for the right driver for your printer and after the initial configuration is done, do the same as above to complete configuring your printer.

Hi croesonen,

If you want to view a print-preview, you need to open the file with gedit, so issue the command:
$ gedit <filename>
and substitute the real filename for <filename>.

Or, with Ubuntu, just double-click in the <filename> and it should launch gedit for the file.

Do the System>Administration>Printing sequence, and click on New (to create a new printer) and go through the Forward buttons - and don't forget to double-click on the new printer and click on job options to change from color to gray for black ink. Print a test page to make sure it works, and just let it do its thing and select the driver for you.

Hi croesonen,

Try the following:
1) Create a new printer (even if its the same one you have hooked up in your system) by doing the following:
System>Administration>Printing
Click on the New Button and follow the instructions (I always name my printer something short, like hp, so I can easily issue a print command from a Terminal window. Also, after the new printer (with a different name than already exists) displays in the Printer Configuration window that comes up initially, double-click on the icon that is created for it to bring up yet anothe window named Printer Properties and then click on the Printer Options in the left-hand column. Change the Media Size to Letter, and the Printout mode from Normal (Color Cartridge) to Normal Grayscale (Black cartridge) then click on Apply, and then Cancel.

Then try to print a short one page text file.
