What server OS?
So here's the deal. On my network there are 3 (5) computers. One with windows 7 and two with windows xp. Also on the windows 7 machine i have virtualbox running ubuntu server and openSUSE. After some thinking i have decided that one of the XP machines is going to be a server. The only problem is, that i dont really know which OS to use. The only thing i know is that i must be linux.
I have some linux experience. I have used ubuntu, openSUSE, Linux mint and debian. I really like ubuntu server but i desperately want to try something new.

To make it easier i have a list of what i will be using it for:

-ssh (irssi and remote controlling)
-webserver (lamp)
-Filesharing on the local network
-Maybe ventrilo/teamspeak
-probably webhost for some friends.

i need this to be very stable and no need for physical contact with the machine, The server will be not be at my place (not enough room).
So, what OS do i need?

Try Gentoo. If you can get that to work you can get anything to work.

The install will ask you many questions. It will only install what you tell it to.

I'm not really a fan of gentoo. you know "The official motto for gentoo users is: If it moves compile it."
And it also have been a slight change of plans, The server will be running on a virtual machine. The computer i was planning to use wouldn't boot from CD. So i need something that runs stable on 256-512 mb RAM.

Why would you want to "try something new" for a server? I would stick with "boring and familiar" for stability and knowledge.

Since you've used Debian, I would go with a pure Debian install.

Slackware or Debian would be my only choices ever for a server.

Normally, I just d-load the DVD, but for slow connections, I believe you'll can install a complete system with just the first three CDs.
