I put it in and it reads from windows fine ,Iv booted from knoppix and ubuntu so this is strange and new for me.
If i understand this correctly, you have successfully booted the cd version of Knoppix and Ubuntu on the Toshiba?

Going back to post#1, your dvd`s were successfully burned afterall and work in a different machine?

Ultimately you want to boot Knoppix 5.3.1 from a flash drive?

At the Pendrivelinux homepage they have instructions specifically for Knoppix 5.3.1 for booting it from flash. Have you tried this yet? It may use a different bootloader for the dvd version.

Is your cd/dvd drive in the Toshiba working ok otherwise, did you burn the dvd .iso`s on it? I cant imagine it being a drive problem if it works ok otherwise. I do have one personal machine here though that doesnt like to boot from dvd half the time but boots from cd fine. It was working fine till i fixed it. LOL A firmware upgrade caused the problem.

YUP iv booted other distro's on the Toshiba before but for some reason i can't get this ubuntu studio media jump started ,all i need to do is get it to read and im planing install it on it's own partition ,it would be nice to run it live but i don't think this Ubuntu distro has that option. I got to burn another knoppix 700mb disk to see if the bios got changed on the toshiba ,this ubuntu is my only media and i gave my knoppix disk away.

Knoppix 5.3.1 on 4G usb ,wouldn't that be to big? i will find out...

Well, Pendrivelinux recommends an 8g or larger drive, no, it wont fit on a 4g. I had the full version of knoppix on hard drive before, it is a homonguous install. LOL

Thats about the only thing i could think of, the bios settings. Thats why i asked to be sure you had booted the cd`s.

Did you have the bios set to boot from cd/dvd or is there a boot options menu available on the Toshiba during startup with a certain key that you used?

Iv got the usual menu boot options ,maybe i possibly unknowingly tinkered around with it and changed the settings. Iv got to figure out how to change it back to default or update it. Note iv never done any of these task before so i'm in for a learning experience.

Yeah i know it's huge that's why i'm curious about it ,i'm looking for other alternatives to windows although windows is good ,well for some things. I run allot of music production software and lots of package chains. Windows vista has some serious windows explore issues so im trying to move on to bigger and better things.

Are you talking about the ''more options'' section?

I`m not that familiar with the Toshiba laptops, but with most and with most current bios` there is an option to change the boot device via a menu without changing the boot order in the bios. On my Presario i hit the esc key to bring up a "Boot Menu" , On my Latitude i press F12 to bring up a "One Time Boot Menu". Look on your splash screen at start up closely and look for something related to "boot menu" or "To change boot menu", you can hit the "Pause/break" key to pause the screen to read it, just hit the space bar to resume. Maybe someone more familiar with the Toshiba laptop can tell you for sure, but i`m pretty sure you should be able to change the boot device without going into bios. Of course theres nothing wrong with changing it in bios to boot from cd/dvd first and leaving it there. It will look for a boot image in the order you have chosen and boot to the first device it finds one on.

I found this at Toshiba finally.

How to access boot menu
You need to have the disc already in the drive for this option, you may not have time to open the door and stick it in after you choose the option before it boots to the hard drive. You can put the disc in the drive while in windows and restart, or use a paperclip through the hole in the front of the drive to open the door with the machine off. (If it has this, all i`ve seen do)

Also heres a handy guide for accessing the bios on most machines. The boot menu option is best for alot of people though, especially if you`re unfamiliar with changing bios settings and don`t want to go stomping around in there.

Success!!!

Why thank you sir for those useful links you've posted ,all i needed to do was change the boot sequence defaults by using the F7 AND F8 keys in CMOS and presto booted.

I have to admit i was a little intimidated by the BOIS's bland interface and my lack of understanding but now i have a better understanding of it's purpose.

Thanks for taking the time ,well appreciated

Glad you got it sorted out. Changing bios settings is really more intimidating than it is difficult, just always make note of your current settings before making changes. If something gets snafued you can always go back to default settings and start over. You can go back to Toshiba`s site and look for the manual for that machine, or the bios vendors site and get instructions for what each setting means and does. I hope Knoppix works out for what you want to do. There are so many programs and applications in the full dvd version, i never did get to look through all of them. LOL
