Questions about burning ISO's to DVD-R's
Hello!

Iv never burned a dvd in my life

I have a few linux ISO's i would like to burn that iv pre downloaded ,iv burned the knoppix 6.2 CD and i got it on usb boot as well but with special iso utility's specialized for that specific iso but i'm having difficulty finding other iso utility's for these specific iso's.

Do i need a different utility every time? There is lots of different options in utility's like unetbootin but iv yet to find one that supports 2 of these at the same time or even one like ubuntu studio.

I got a 20 pack of sony 4.7 GB DVD-R's that i think will fit all of these and a few 8.7 DVD-DL's

ubuntustudio-9.10-alternate-i386.iso 1,520,320 KB

KNOPPIX_V5.3.1DVD-2008-03-26-EN.iso 4,342,594 KB

trisquel-gamer-2010-2.iso 1,341,290 KB

I'm running fresh win vista 32bit can someone fill me in thanks.

(...I'm not sure about Winrar - is that not an archive file for compressing/decompressing?)

OK i tried out this CDBurnerXP and on my 2nd attempt i get errors ''disk is of bad quality or is not compatible''

I checked the right options as i would with some of the other utility's ,their was some options that i didn't quite understand but i don't understand why it didn't do this the first time.

My disk is SONY DVD-R 120MIN 4.7GB

Could it be that your Burner only likes DVD + R ... not DVD - R
My earlier computers could not do DVD - R

If you've already got Knoppix booting from the USB, it's got K3B installed.
You can burn CD and DVD images (ISO's) with this.

There are a number of freeware burning programs that will do the job, the two you`ve already tried should have worked, ImgBurn is a good one also and is listed in the link above. Nero and most of the other commercial apps will also do this. I would say that it is probably a setting somewhere that isnt quite right, like maybe selecting the type of media(cd or dvd) , burn speed...ect. I`ve never used sony media , but i`m sure it`s probably better quality than the "on sale" stuff i usually use, and i seldom have a problem with dvd-r or dvd+r either one.

If you put the coaster in the drive and open it, what do you see, how many files? If you see only one file " xxxxxxxxxxx.iso" then it only copied the data, you should see multiple files if it was burned properly.

I put it in and it reads from windows fine ,Iv booted from knoppix and ubuntu so this is strange and new for me.

It got disk ,doc ,isolinux ,pool ,cdromupgrade ,READMES , dists ,install ,pics ,preseed ,TXT and Ubuntu.

I was looking for a boot folder ,well thats what iv found in my knoppix usb files reading from windows but this is dvd.

I didn't see any settings for choosing DVD-R or any type of DVD's in any of the programs ,maybe i should find one with these settings orr...i can do it from in knoppix...

Ok, i dont have the dvd version of Knoppix to look at the files, or the Ubuntu-alternate. ImgBurn is the onlu freeware burner i have installed at the moment. I just burned a copy of Kubuntu for a friend and put it on dvd just for grins with ImgBurn, on a TDK dvd-r, it boots and runs ok. (Just choose the option"Write image file to disc", it will detect the media type and default burn rate is automatic and max) You might try lowering your burn speed with whatever program you use, writing at max sometimes causes problems , with cd and dvd.

As prunejuice mentioned above, you can also just use K3b built into Knoppix. Select the option "Burn DVD iso image" in the bottom right corner.

I noticed when using isorecord the recording settings changed right after i set the DVD in the drive ,i used the lowest possible speed i think it was 18x

When i try iso recorder know i get can not use media message i may have not seen the first time

These things were on sale for obvious reasons i guess

Isorecorder may not be detecting the media properly now for some reason. 18x is almost max dvd burn rate for most newer drives. If you have the option to manually set record speed, try it at 8x or so. Or try ImgBurn or K3b, i`ve never had a problem with either one. It may be the discs or a drive problem, but it could also be Isorecorder itself. Maybe try the discs in another machine.

Well ,this is what i get when attempting to boot from CD rom drive

Intel UNDI, PXE-2.1 (build 082)
Copyright (C) 1997-2000 Intel Corporation

Realtek.......
Ethernet Controller.......

BIOS doesn't find bootable media so tries to boot from network

Strangely enough both of the burns work because i slapped them into my old asus tower running knoppix 6.2.

I checked integrity of the disk and they are good ,now iv got 2 copy's i should of took one of the disk over to my brothers and tried it on another machine.
